These are samplings of some of the illustration techniques I master.

Light and shadow exercise

Light and shadow exercise

Simplification and working with shadows and contrast is one of the more challenging aspects of illustration. This is a simplified version of a statue of Hermes that I used to have sitting on my desk. Not focusing on features of the statue, but adressing only the simple shadow that played across its marble surface.

I chose to include this in my portfolio, just as an example of my range of techniques.

Vitruvian Woman

Vitruvian Woman

Leonardo Da Vinci always inspired me when I was young. So this is my own take on the female form in the iconic Vitruvian Man. Is her face perhaps a bit cartoonish? Yeah, well that was the style I was most comfortable with at the time.

The Phantom

The Phantom

I have been and in all probability will always be a fan of super heroes. The first super-hero I encountered was not Superman or Spider-man, but instead Lee Falk’s The Phantom. However as my interest in comics grew I started to re-imagine the characters. For instance I thought that The Phantom’s suit was not as scary or dark as it should have been. So hence this updated version where the suit is more suitable to creeping around at night in the jungle.

Mad scientist

Mad scientist

This illustration is done in a 1960′s style, made popular by Cartoon Network. It was an experiment to see if I could handle the simplistic and 2D style so iconic for that era.

Economic hurdles

Economic hurdles

For a presentation about the current climate I produced this illustration, showing how “England would prevail the upcoming economic hurdles while the other competitors fell behind”. That is what they said, and that is what they got.

Highstreet cycle

Highstreet cycle

I was asked to produce some illustrations for a presentation given by some of the senior staff at a seminar. They wanted something else to keep the audience attention than just the standard clip-art. In particular they found it hard to show the upcoming highstreet cycle, as local shops increasingly got replaced by malls and shopping centres. They thought I nailed it.

Dragon

Dragon

I had this old sketch I did of a dragon. I blame it on reading up on chinese astrology, only to find out I was born in the year of the dragon. It has been a totem of mine ever since. Now this is how I see dragons – benevolent, fierce and not to be trifled with.
